Router Connection Problems – How to identify them

Routers, especially wireless ones, make it easy for every home to have its own home network. However, there are some problems that may occur which can make the Internet connection unstable or completely lost. Trying to resolve the connectivity issues generally ends in following some standard procedures based around the router settings. Of course, this article won’t help you if your router has suffered some physical damage, but everything else is usually easy to solve in a few simple steps.

1. Reboot the router

One of the most commonly used and at the same time the method which has been most successful is router reboot. To do this you have to shut down your PC first and then reboot the router. It is important to have your PC shut down because once you turn it on after the router reboot process it will make a connection to the router. Although the problems may disappear without the PC restart, it is recommended to do this first.

Unplug the router and the modem for about 30 seconds and plug in the modem first. After all the lights have become stable, and then plug in the router. Turn on your PC.

In most cases your internet connection will be working again after doing this. So, you may ask, what exactly happened here?

Well, when you reboot your router, the current settings i.e configuration is cleared and a new connection is made with new settings.

2. Adjust Router Settings

To adjust the router settings you will have to have the settings provided by your Internet Service Provider. Without these settings you will not know if the current ones are correct.

If you already have these or you have managed to contact your ISP and get their configuration settings you have to login to your router. To do this, start up your router and type the default IP address of the router in the address bar. Depending on the router brand, your router’s default IP can be:

  • 192.168.0.1
  • 192.168.1.1
  • 192.168.2.1
  • 192.168.1.254
  • 10.0.1.1

Try these and see if the login page opens. Alternatively, you can check your IP address in the command Prompt. Read here how to do this.

Enter the default username and password (you can use this website to find these details)

Once you login to the router settings, check the Basic settings and check the configuration settings you have received from your ISP to see if they match.

If you have made any changes don’t forget to save them.

Finally, if the problems are still there, it is better to contact your ISP and check if the problem is on their side.
